Apparently I don't own a real bike

I was cruising the outskirts of DFW over the weekend trying to get some miles in and learn a few things out on the road as I'm somewhat new to riding (3-4 month in). A little over 2 hours in, I decided to stop at a diner to grab a bite to eat, and to rest my sore butt. As I was pulling in, two older guys on Harleys pull in as well. As I'm standing next to my bike and taking my gear off, the come over and ask me what kind of bike I have, and I tell them it's a Honda Shadow 750. I'll admit, I got a little excited because I hardly get to talk to other bikers, and I thought that we would have a pretty good conversation about bikes. Nope. One of them immediately told me that i need to get a "real bike". I just brushed them off, got my lunch, and hit the road again. I just couldn't help but think how snooty they were about bikes, branding, and engine size. I'm just starting out and really love my bike. I'm just wondering if this is a common issue and how y'all would deal with something like this. It kinda makes me want to keep cruising solo.
